About Lester's Farm

For over 150 years, the Lester's have been farming on Brookfield Road. During this time, we have supplied St. John's and the surrounding area with high quality fresh products. Milk, eggs, poultry and a great variety of fresh vegetables and small fruit have all been produced here on the farm. The sixth generation of Lester's are now working on the farm with the seventh taking an interest as well. The family farm is now split into two separate operations. The dairy farm, milking over 200 Holstein cows being one, and the farm market being the other.

After a short stay in Prince Edward Island, John, Mary and family moved back to the family farm in 1983 to concentrate on vegetable production. For ten years the focus was on growing lettuce, broccoli and some cabbage and turnip for the wholesalers. In 1994 we constructed a small structure to sell some of our produce directly to the consumer. That was perhaps the best move we ever made. While still tending to the wholesale market, we started to grow a wider variety of vegetables. Over the next five years the small market was expanded to meet the fast growing customer base that our friendly service and fresh vegetables were attracting. During December of 1999 we moved into our current market. We decided to add a dairy bar, and were able to carry a better selection of produce. Since the first year in 1994 with the little market, to the 2002 season the amount of produce marketed to the wholesalers has decreased until in 2003, when everything that we grew was sold through our farm market. In 1994 we were growing a little over twenty acres and this coming year, 2005, we will use nearly sixty acres of land.

Eventually a petting barn was constructed because we wanted families and children to experience a little bit of the joy we feel every day on the farm. The petting barn and the animals have become extremely popular with any families coming to spend a few hours going through our corn maze, going on trailer rides, petting the animals or just sitting back and enjoying the overall farm atmosphere. Also, in 2002 we decided to plant two acres of strawberries for a u-pick, it has since become the largest u-pick in the metro area, requiring us to plant more and more every year. Our farm market has experienced considerable growth every year since 1994, a trend we hope to continue.
